Former presidential candidate Herman Cain dies after month-long battle with coronavirus.

 2012 presidential candidate Herman Cain died in an Atlanta-area hospital after battling the coronavirus, according to a statement posted on his official Twitter account on Thursday. He was 74 years old.

Cain had been hospitalized in early July for COVID-19. As co-chair of Black Voices for Trump, Cain was one of the substitutes at President Donald Trump's June 20 rally in Tulsa , Oklahoma. At least eight employees of the Trump breakthrough team who attended the Tulsa rally also tested positive for coronavirus.

Trump faced criticism for holding the big event despite warnings from public health experts that holding mass meetings is still not safe. More than 6,000 people attended the rally at the BOK Center, an arena that seats more than 19,000.

Cain briefly rose to the top of the polls during the 2012 race for the Republican presidential nomination by highlighting a plan to simplify the tax code with what he called the 9-9-9 plan. In the election campaign, he spoke about the 2006 diagnosis of stage 4 liver cancer and his doctors gave him little hope of long-term survival.

More recently, he has remained involved in conservative politics as a commentator on Newsmax.

Dan Calabrese, editor of HermanCain.com, posted the obituary on Cain's website and Twitter, saying in part:

Let me cover some of the details from the past few weeks. We knew when he was first hospitalized with COVID-19 that it was going to be a tough fight. He had trouble breathing and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. We all prayed that the initial medicines they gave her would bring her breathing back to normal, but it quickly became apparent that she was in a battle.

We do not post detailed updates on your status to the public or the media because neither you nor your family think there was any reason for that. There were hopeful indicators, even just five days ago, when doctors told us they thought he would eventually recover, although it wouldn't be fast. We are relieved to be told and broadcast the news on Herman's social media. And yet we also feel real concern that he never seemed to get to the point where the doctors could get him to the recovery phase.
