main celebration takes place in New Delhi, where the Prime Minister raises the
national flag at the Red Fort and from its walls gives a nationally televised
speech.

74th independence day: history and meaning
On
August 15, 1947, India gained its due freedom from British rule. It took two
centuries of fierce battles to win this freedom. Throughout much of the 18th,
19th, and 20th centuries, the story of Indian independence is something that is
told to all Indians from a very young age.
It
was on August 15, 1947 that India received the power to govern itself. However,
it has also come to represent the partition of the country, when India and
Pakistan were formed after much fighting and bloodshed.
Independence
Day is served to continually remind Indians how far the country has come as one
and not to forget the sacrifices that brought it here. The first Independence
Day saw the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru raise the tricolor at
the Red Fort. This tradition continues to this day
Independence
Day 2020.
This Independence Day, will be India's 74th celebration. The country will witness Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ceremonial speech on the morning of August 15 along with the flag-raising ceremony. There will also be the usual Indian Army Independence Day parade.
However,
due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this time the parade will be filmed by battalions
in advance instead of the live ritual show. The full dress rehearsal was held
on Thursday for the event before Saturday.
The
country is under heavy security ahead of the 74th Independence Day celebrations
tomorrow. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the national flag at the Red
Fort at 7.30 am. There will be only a handful of celebrations this time around
in Covid's setting.
PM Modi: "Urge You To Take Pledge On Independence Day For Freedom From Virus"
This time the
Independence Day celebrations will be held under strict restrictions in the
context of Covid. This time only 1500 people can enter the Red Fort festival
which is attended by over ten thousand people. Those with Covid symptoms are
also advised not to attend the ceremony.
Covid fighters are the focus of this year's Independence Day
celebrations. In the evening, the President will address the nation.
