Students will learn if they get paid - but there is a catch. 



Clearly, students play an important role in their own destiny within the educational system. While learning can be a difficult mountain to climb, what makes it tick?

Children can become enthusiastic about learning when they are interested in the subject matter presented to them and when they understand how what they learn in school will help them in the real world.

Of course, there are many things, from television to the behaviors of your peers, that compete with the studies for your attention. Excellent teachers are known to make learning interesting and relevant , especially when they have engaging curricular material.

Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation 


There are generally two main strategies for motivating students to learn: engaging them or compelling them. Much has been written regarding the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in education. Intrinsic motivation is one that comes from within the person. When a student encounters a fascinating topic, the motivation to learn more about it comes naturally. Kids who memorize baseball statistics often don't do it for a test later. Sugata Mitra , an educational researcher, has documented some of the amazing achievements of Indian children who have come together to learn subjects that interest them.

Extrinsic motivation (which comes from outside) will always be the second option, but it is no less important for that. The classic extrinsic motivator in school is the grade: "Do your homework, whether you are interested or not!" In the same category are bribes from parents. Perhaps the best extrinsic motivators are the temporary type, the “fake it until you do it” style . These manage to overcome the initial doubts that the student has when entering an activity, thus giving him the opportunity to experience the pleasure that he can obtain from learning it. 

Extrinsic motivators can also be helpful in establishing and maintaining community norms. For example, KIPP, a network of charter schools, uses an extrinsic rewards system called “payroll checks” to establish and reinforce clear behavioral expectations for the student. 

Daniel H. Pink's book Drive summarizes the studies done on motivation and makes very persuasive arguments about the risks of relying heavily on extrinsic motivation. Although he is mostly aimed at a business audience, his work has gained a large readership in education. Prior to Pink's book, the most notable work on this topic was Alfie Kohn's Punished by Rewards . 

Of course, the fact that the student is interested in a subject does not necessarily mean that he will learn it. The motivation to start may be different from the complex factors that drive you to continue.

Carol Dweck describes student motivation in education as a matter of attitude. When students believe that they can learn anything with effort, they can maintain their attention and energy to achieve wonderful things. Dweck calls this a "growth attitude." But if they believe that their learning capacity is fixed, they limit themselves.Statements like "I'm bad at math" or "I'm not a good student" tend to come true. She makes the case with evidence that teachers and parents can influence students' attitudes through the way they challenge them.

There is ample evidence that participation in sports or the arts engages youth with school, motivates them to perform better academically, and teaches them to develop important life skills. 

One major reform that is garnering a lot of attention, given its success in motivating high school students, is linked learning . This approach to learning combines rigorous academic methods with technical training to better prepare students for college and career. Assessments have been conducted showing that students in these programs are much more engaged with what they learn and greatly increase their chances of graduating.

so that each student is exposed to educational material that is not too easy ( therefore boring) nor very advanced (therefore frustrating). This is a promising area: in the end, education is about learning, which is the work that students do when they are properly motivated. Susan Sandler (founder of Justice Matters) has done a good job outlining a broad definition of what personalization means in education.
