TODAY This year's Mahashivaratri festival will be celebrated on March 11. The word Shivaratri comes from the combination of Shiva and night. That is, the night dedicated to Shiva. A total of 12 Shivaratri are celebrated once a month in a year. Mahashivaratri is the most important of them.
Mahashivaratri is celebrated with great fanfare all over the country. Shivaratri is actually the festival of union of Shiva and Parvati. Parvati, the goddess of love, beauty and productivity, is reunited with the god Shiva on this night. Another name of Goddess Parvati is Shakti. Shivaratri is the celebration of the union of Shiva and Shakti. According to the Puranas, on the wedding night of Mahadev and Parvati, many gods, goddesses, animals and demons took Shiva to Parvati's house.
Shiva and Parvati are the source of union, love and strength. The festival of Mahashivaratri celebrates their reunion and spiritual bond. Crowds of devotees have been flocking to Shiva temples in different parts of the country since this morning. The devotees have been eagerly waiting outside the temples since dawn with chanting of Om Namah Shivaya and Har Har Mahadev. Special worship is held in Shiva temples throughout the night.
There is a strict custom of fasting on Mahashivaratri. Rudra Abhishek of Shivling is worshiped on this day. Shivling is worshiped with water, milk, honey, sugarcane juice and yoghurt. Besides, dhutra flowers and fruits must be given for the inauguration of Mahadev. Married women fast on Mahashivaratri to wish their husbands well. Unmarried women fast on this day and pray for a husband like Shiva.
According to the vows of Shivaratri, on this day a hunter wanders in the forest and takes refuge in a branch of a bel tree. He started tearing the leaves of the tree and throwing them down. Below there was a Shivling. Mahadev was happy to read Belpata and blessed him. According to Kalkut, on this very day, as a result of the churning of the sea of gods and demons, a terrible Kalkut poison came up. The whole world is shaking with that poison. To save the creation, Mahadev holds that poison in his voice. His voice turned blue with poison, so his other name is Nilakantha.
